Hi Everyone.

My 70' mast is now mounted onto the Landrover and I took it out for a test at the weekend.

http://www.focusbritain.com/news/53-...-it-up-at-last

Everything went really well and the new mount and receiver worked perfectly. A good crowd soon gathered which stopped the testing over handing out business cards and showing people the computer screen.

I popped the Go Pro Hero II onto the camera and videoed as well, see link above, the results of which appear very promising for the arrival of the D800 and dSLR video.

Happy Photography

and they are expensive...what did you expect for military grade! 499.00euros
Apparently they are not that new, came out in 2010 at Photokina. I just haven't seen them before and the postings on RCG are from 2011.
If you haven't seen them then they are new to you.

They are called the "Pirate Eye".
800 x 600 pixel compared to the "Centra's" 340 x 280 pixel display. You'll be able to read your battery level and see your attitude bar at least!

However, after reading the thread inputs on RCG I think they are worth the money because your not going to find many goggles with only one screen set low so you can look over the top and still see your heli or M/C. Technology has advanced since the Eyetop Centra so the screen is much better.
The full wrap-around goggles work for FPV, but I maintain it is more important to be able to be aware of your surroundings and able to see where your bird is at all times. These allow you to see where you put your feet so you don't trip on anything!
For pro level work these are good if only to know you have the lens pointed at the right place to frame the shot.
I'm going to blatently steal the info from RCG as I have no experience with them yet, but I will.

Where to buy:
http://www.1001copters.com/lang-en/1...-video-glasses

RCG thread:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1482286

Good info here on this French forum with translation from google: The first page anyway for info!
http://translate.google.fr/translate...%2C5187.0.html

YouTube sample of the view:

This is from "Catlord" owner of 1001 copters who does also sell them, but he has valid info and says it much better then I could anyway!
"I'm the owner of 1001copters, and I'm the 1001copters of the multirotorforum.

I have copied paste my message because it was easier for saying the same thing.

Don't speak about profit margin when you don't know how this famous margin is.
the inventor of the PirateEye has bought the I-port and another goggle (around 1000$) before producing his own product, the main difference between the -port and the PirateEye is the oled screen and the resolution. ho yes by the way, the I-port gives you a black and withe image unless you plug it on a tv monitor.

There are "small" differences between the Eye-view XT and the PirateEye:

Patrick is a perfectionist guy, he has worked a lot on his product in order to have something very good:

- the goggle connector is a Lemo one ( 15€ exluding tax when you buy 100 of them...) Why ? This is a professional connector, you can plug it in 20 times a day and 2 years after, it's still working.

- the goggle are ESS one, (65€) army and police habilited, real UV protection, scratch protection. In the pack there is a white glass and and black glass in order to be able to work with sun ou with bad day (or interior)

-The PirateEye allows you to use REAL corrective glass. This is not bad lens +1+2+3/-1-2-3 dioptry like on fatshark. You go to your goggle shop and you request the glass for your own dioptry.

- the video monitor is mounted on a rotul that allow you to place the video monitor the best way for YOUR eye, you don't have to place all the goggle in a good way to see the video monitor: every people have different eye, space between eye/nose and choosing a monolitic product is not a very good choice: you will have to adapt yourself to the product, not the reverse.

- The Eye view seem to hide completely the line of sight of the right eye, this is not the way the PirateEye have been thought: the scope of a monocular google is to have the possibility to switch between your normal line of sight to be able to pilot with TWO eye ( one eye= no relief) and your video monitor in a blink. The video monitor of the PirateEYe is placed under the line of sight when you watch your aircraft in the air and it seems that's not the case of the Eye-view.

-the lens in front of the monitor is a quality lens that avoid chromatic abberation and optical abberation (unlike on the Fatshark base), you can see it on the video I have made.

Another point to show you how Patrick is perfectionist: there is a belt bag to place the google inside when you don't use it on the field. Inside this belt bag there is a pooch to place the cable and the connector in order to avoid any contact between connector and glass.

So yes , PirateEye and Eye-View have the same resolution but the products used to build the goggle are far far different in terms of quality and services."

Catlord said it best "It's a professional tool, not a hobby toy."

Hi everyone

I've been a bit quiet for several months as I relocated from Canada back to my UK Homeland.

Getting my 70' winch driven Luska mast sorted has been very challenging, but at last its on a specially modified Landrover Defender. My aim is to have one of the most versatile mast mount vehicles outside of the military, and so far I am very pleased.

IMG_0397-Polepics_Photo_Aerial_Mast-.jpg

I've added lateral adjustment at the mount, and I can also jack the chassis directly to add further stability and adjustment. Elevated Testing will take place on Thursday if the weather is nice, and I'll be making a video of the truck features very soon.

This is my Second truck, and I made improvements based on research and 3 years operational experience of my first truck in Canada. Lettering is to come, along with an electrical package and storage upgrades following some further field work.

Lots of projects in the bag, D800E arriving any day and just cannot wait to start photographing the world from the best angle !!

Cheers, Steven

Elevated Panoramas - Newbie Advice

Hi guys I hope I am in the right place for some advice.

Hi guys I hope I am in the right place for some advice.

I work for a Police force in the UK and I currently produce 360 degree QuickTime panoramas showing crime scenes internally and externally, these are at ground level for use in courtroom presentations and having seen some examples of elevated panoramas I believe these would be great addition to my role.

Having spoken with my boss he has tasked me with researching what equipment I would require to carry out this service and that's where this forum and you guys come in.

I don't want to purchase anything which is not up to the job or find out I could have got better quality kit for same or less price, especially as I don't like wasting the public's money (believe it or not :D).

I would be looking at a minimum mast height of around 15m / 50ft or taller, I was also looking at a robotic automatic type pano head with wireless connection to a laptop at ground level so it can be fired remotely but not sure if this is the right way to go, I have looked through the forum and seen a few people have self developed systems but I would require an off the shelf type product.

I have access to a Canon Eos 600D DSLR and a Samyang full fisheye 8mm lens (but I could purchase a new lens if required).

Capturing the nadir or as much of information below would be required and I understand this would include the mast set up but I have seen examples with no masts shown but just the ground below and would love to know how these are done

And now the budget I have to spend is around £2000 or $3000, am I wishing for the ridiculous or would I be able to get this up and running?

Many thanks

Scott

FBL controller for AP helis

I just bought a Helicommand HC3-SX for my T-Rex 700E FBL AP ship. But before I break the seal on the package, I would like to know what other pilots are using for their helis.

I am planning to fly the heli via FPV video downlink, with a separate operator for the AP camera. I was concerned with the Skookum SK 720 having problems with the rescue mode being disabled (unbeknownst to the pilot) when the controller detects too much vibration. The HC is very tolerant of vibrations. Also, the HC will actuate collective during a bailout to push the heli away from the ground.

However, seeing as the Skookum has the vibration analysis function, and also will soon have GPS position hold capability, and the Helicommand has neither of these, I am thinking about returning the helicommand and exchanging it for the Skookum.

Any AP pilots have any experience with either of these controllers, or favor any others?

Learning just keeps occuring! Comments and a couple of Questions.

I have a couple of questions and just general thoughts. I can't believe how much I have learned in the last 4-6 months of getting into AP. So here is a short list...

Converted Trex 600 to AP with 2X Camera Mount
FB to FBL and using HC3-SX (learning curve)

Converting (about 95% complete) Trex 700N to E to AP and 800 size. Kept this one FB (F3C) and can't believe how stable it is.
Made my own 3X Camera Mount using drill and dremel. What a PITA and will not do it again.

Using Hitec Aurora 9 for main radio, and DX7 for camera control.

Ordered Picloc 3x

Purchased Canon 3Ti (learned that stock lens is not very good---also learned how much good lenses cost)
Having to relearn how to take photos...but have been out of it since the early 80's.
Purchased Adobe Elements/Premiere and PS Lightroom (wow). Reading a lot!

Purchase FatShark and learning FPV...not to fly but as a back up for the camera operator.
Puchased everything needed for a Ground Station...just have to get it together. FPV is a entirely new field to me and LOTS TO LEARN. Not going for a full-blown Kilometer or two FPV unit, just good enough for camera ground operations.

So with all of this said, my brain hurts. Time for a break. But, I will say that I recently purchased a Sony HX9V for $200 and am BLOWN AWAY on how it performs. Unfortunately, my wife now owns it...:) Thats OK, she is giving me a new daughter any day now...so fair trade and she deserves it. Really amazing camera....or at least to me anyway. The video is stunning.

I will NEVER attempt to make a 3X camera mount again. IF I had the right tools to do it, peice of cake, but armed with a dremel, a drill and tons of fingernail files...wow. Will post some pics when I am done making it lighter. Right now it is too heavy. Not as good as the $$$$$$$ units, but then again, I only have about $400 in it and it is pretty darn smooth and slop free.

At this stage, I am in the flying and taking pictures mode. Which brings me to my questions:

I understand that there is no perfect camera or lens. In the Marines, when we were on the Rifle Range and shooting poorly, we use to say, 'It isn't the dope on the rifle, but the dope behind the rifle (dope meaning sighting in-windage and elevation, etc.) Kind of figure that this applies just as much to using a camera. But, I have the 14-55mm stock lens on my 3Ti. If you were to have only one lens, which would you pick? I know the 10-22 is the preferred lens, and I am leaning that way. Any suggestions? Is the Canon len's that much better then aftermarket, such as Tamron?

For video, and yes the video is quite nice with the 3Ti, what other choices would you suggest? I am aware of the Panasonic GH2, and it is looking attractive-or at least as attractive as the Nex-5n. From what I have read, it seems that the 5n will suffice just as well as the 7n for video, and half the price. Would something like the Sony NEX-VG10 be better than the Sony Nex-5n/7n? I know that sounds ridiculous, but again, tailored for AP work, which I know makes a huge difference (rolling shutter and the likes). Would it be worth to spend the extra $$$ on the camcorder, or stick with the Nex-5n?

This site has really helped me alot, along with all of the great input and help from others on here. Hope I have made sense and don't sound like I am rambling. I did take heed to what someone on here said. They stated (as close as I remember) that if you really want to be successful, then you need to be the 'go to man', and not sub contract parts out. That kind of hit home with me. Hope it makes sense.

Safe flying and again, thanks for your help and any input. Semper Fi!

T2i aerial stills help

So I put my t2i in the air finally. I am not a photographer. Therefore my photo skills stink to say the least. I was doing stills of a house and couldn't seem to get a good quality pic. Is there a good starting point for settings? Should I set it for aperature priority and make small adjustment to the aperature and let the camera make the rest of the adjustments?

At this time I am using the kit lens. I set the focus to manual. I set the focus before taking off by focusing on an object a couple hundred feet away.

I have attached a pic. It was taken in jpeg. The only photoshop I have done to it is edited out the trash can in the driveway below, and closed my trunk. Any feedback would be great. I just want to learn how to get that crisp clean look everyone else is getting.
